MAJOR FISH KILL ON THE OLENTANGY WAS CAUSED BY CHEMICALS FROM THE PENNWALT CORPORATION STORAGE BUILDING, WHICH WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS JUNE 20, 1974. THE DAMAGE WAS BELIEVED CAUSED BY LIGHTNING HITTING THE STRUCTURE. CHEMICALS WERE WASHED HALF A MILE DOWN THE STORM DRAIN, AND KILLED FISH FOR FOUR MILES DOWNSTREAM.
