| Function and Use: | The NLAES was conducted to measure factors relating to alcohol use and alcohol use disorders and their associated disabilities in the American population. The NLAES served several purposes. Chief among these were to measure the prevalence, incidence and other rates of drinking levels, alcohol use disorders, and their associated disabilities; to identify risk factors of alcohol use and associated disabilities; to determine the economic impact of alcohol and drug use disorders and the relationships between alcohol and drug use disorders and other psychiatric conditions; to estimate the size, characteristics, and time trends of target populations including alcohol and drug abusers; and to obtain information on alcohol and drug treatment utilization. |
