| Arrangement: | Arranged in three principal subseries. The first subseries consists of commissioned Navy ships, arranged alphabetically by name or by hull designation, with unnamed ships thereunder arranged by hull number. The second subseries consists of commissioned Navy shore installations and other non-ship units and commands, arranged alphabetically by type of activity and thereunder alphabetically by location or numerically by unit identifier. The third subseries consists of Marine Corps units, arranged by type of Marine Corps unit and thereunder alphabetically by location or numerically by unit identifier. Each individual muster roll is arranged chronologically by date of preparation, with reports of changes preceding each quarterly muster roll. Both the muster rolls and the associated reports of changes are arranged thereunder alphabetically by surname. |
| Function and Use: | These records were created to document enlisted Navy personnel assigned to each and every discrete Navy command (known as "activities" in Navy terminology), such as ships, aviation squadrons, air stations, bases, stations, training centers and schools, flag staffs, and Marine Corps units. |
