| Arrangement: | Arranged into chronological segments: January 1941 - June 1945; July 1945 - December 1950; and thereafter by single years. The first time period is arranged into four distinct subseries: named ships appear first, followed by unnamed ships, craft, and other vessels, and then followed by a small number of shore units. The fourth subseries consists of small format "patrol logs," mostly submitted by unnamed vessels such as motor patrol boats (PT-boats), arranged alphabetically by hull type and thereunder numerically. In the subsequent yearly chronological segments, all named ships precede any unnamed vessels. Named ships are arranged alphabetically by first letter of each ship's name. Unnamed vessels are arranged alphabetically by hull type and thereunder numerically. There is some overlapping of dates between the first two segments. Individual logbooks are arranged chronologically by date, with entries in each day's log arranged chronologically by the time of day as indicated on the 24-hour clock. |
| Function and Use: | Deck logs were created to form a chronological account of notable events occurring in and around a ship (or other command, as appropriate), to serve as a reminder to the officers of the deck of their various duties, and to serve as a check on the activities of the officers of the deck. They were also maintained to serve as potential evidence in legal proceedings in naval, admiralty, or civil courts. |

|---|---|
| Finding Aid Note: | Special List 44, "List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947," consists of an alphabetical list of vessels and dates of extant logs created during that time frame that had been transferred to NARA at the time of publication (1978). The date of coverage, however, does not reflect the fact that most logs dating after June 1945 had not yet been accessioned by NARA at the time of publication. |
