Arrangement:Arranged in three parts. The first part consists of jacket - envelopes for soldiers who served in state organizations. These are arranged alphabetically by state, thereunder by branch of service (cavalry, artillery, and infantry), thereunder by designation of organization, and thereunder alphabetically by name of person.

The second part consists of jacket - envelopes for soldiers who served in organizations raised directly by the Confederate government. These are arranged by name of organization and thereunder alphabetically by name of person.

The third part consists of jacket - envelopes for general and staff officers, and is arranged alphabetically by name of officer.
Function and Use:These records were created between 1903 and 1927 from information abstracted from Union prison and parole records and from captured and other surviving Confederate records to document the service of individuals who fought in Confederate units during the American Civil War.
