Function and Use:These individual case files were created to assist in the enforcement of the Chinese Exclusion laws and to verify the information received from the person attempting to enter or re-enter the United States. Under the provisions of Chinese Exclusion Acts, all persons of Chinese ancestry, whether a United States citizen or not, went through an examination process that determined their eligibility to immigrate to or re-enter this country. This series includes case files created by the Immigration and Naturalization Service's district offices that had responsibility for the port of entry where the individual first entered or left the United States.
