|Arrangement:||Arranged into two time periods, 1801-1914 and 1915-1940. Within each time period the logbooks are arranged into three distinct segments, named vessels, numbered craft, and shore units. Within each segment the logbooks are arranged alphabetically and chronologically. There is some overlapping in dates between segments.
|Function and Use:||The logbook is one of the basic historical records of the operation of naval vessels and shore units. They also have long-term administrative value as basic sources of information on the service of officers and men in the Navy. Such matters as claims, pensions, and other benefits are sometimes proved or disproved by reference to accounts contained in these logbooks.|
