Arrangement:Arranged chronologically by date of petition from 1795 to 1906, and numerically by petition number from 1906 to 1991.
Function and Use:These petitions were instruments by which aliens who had declared their intention to become U.S. citizens and had resided in the United States continuously for five years made formal application to the court to grant U.S. citizenship. The court used the information on the petition to determine whether the petition should be granted or denied.

General Note(s):Prior to 1906, petitions for naturalization varied widely among the courts of various jurisdiction. With the passage of the Act of June 29 1906, the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization established standard forms to be used throughout the country.

The courts' jurisdiction over the naturalization process ended on October 1, 1991.
