General Note(s):This series of War of 1812 pension application files is one of several series of records in the National Archives relating to applications for benefits granted to veterans or their survivors based of their military or naval service. Following the precedent set for veterans of the Revolutionary War, Congress authorized pensions for those who served in the War of 1812. Congress also passed laws that authorized the granting of land warrants to those who served in the War of 1812 and other early wars.

Records in the National Archives also include bounty-land claims for War of 1812 service. These files are part of a series of bounty-land warrant applications based on service between 1812 and 1855 that were not consolidated with the War of 1812 pension applications. A few files for Regular Army soldiers whose service included the War of 1812, but began before 1812 or continued after 1815 are part of a series of "Old Wars" applications relating to claims based on death or disability incurred in service in the early wars.
An on-line version of National Archives Trust Fund Form 85, Order for Copies of Federal Pension or Bounty Land Warrant Applications, is available through the National Archives' website.
