Arrangement:Arranged alphabetically by subject category; thereunder, chronologically by date the images were entered into the State Department central file, and by corresponding sequence of State-assigned, "VS" (for "Visual Services") log numbers.
Function and Use:This series represents the principal subject reference component, for the 1950's-early 1960's, within the larger Department of State central photographic files that functioned as the permanent visual record of diplomatic officials, facilities, and events, as well as the pivotal resource for State staff preparing press releases, publications, and exhibits and other graphic displays.

Majority of the images (roughly 60%) were taken by State photographers or other U.S. government agency camerapeople, and are thus in the public domain. Remaining images, deriving from assorted commercial, foreign government, or international government (e.g., United Nations) sources, were acquired by State only for State use, and may still be under copyright protection or may carry other rights claims made by the respective producers. For any of these items, researchers are responsible for investigating rights status, for obtaining whatever reproduction permission might be necessary, and for paying any permission fees that might be required. Originating photo-source is usually indicated on the print mount, and on the corresponding index card and shelflist card.
