Date Note:Although the agency began compiling the time series data file in about 1998, it included data from the 1968 and later Elementary and Secondary School Civil Rights Surveys. The surveys were conducted in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and every even year thereafter through 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2002.

Function and Use:The agency created and maintained these data to support the enforcement of laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, and age in programs that receive federal financial assistance from the Department of Education. Data from these surveys was used by social scientists conducting research on discrimination, and by civil rights and other groups monitoring issues related to their programs.
